The School of Architecture would like to thank Letterman's Blue Print and Supply for sponsoring a competition for the Mid City Studio Fall 2013 project, Food + Shelter. The project aims to provide a fresh, healthy food option to an under-served part of Mid City while addressing the area's homeless population. The project brief calls for a grocery and a cafe that will also serve as a workforce development program for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent de Paul lies at the center of the city's homeless services and hopes to expand its shelters and counseling services to include workforce development. The workforce development program would offer on-the-job training in the food-service and retail-grocery industries as well as provide a more comprehensive support network to any of St. Vincent de Paul's clients that participate. At the same time, it would provide a fresh, healthy option for dining and grocery shopping to local residents who may not have easy access to such things.

The cafe and grocery could also benefit adjacent neighborhoods and workday commuters that use the North Blvd. corridor. In response, the competition also challenges students to propose housing that will either serve the workforce development program directly or act as additional housing for the neighborhood. The competition aims to generate ideas and spark conversation. We hope this project can eventually move beyond the conceptual and into real dollars and real construction. This is where we begin.

This year, the studio includes fourth and fifth year students from both Louisiana State and Southern University's Schools of Architecture.  During the first phase of this project, students directly engaged community partners, documented site conditions, developed community engagement strategies and hosted a community event to promote the project and get feedback from residents and other stakeholders. The Mid City Redevelopment Alliance (MCRA) and the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority (EBRRA) helped the studio identify and develop a relationship with St. Vincent de Paul for this project. Our hope is to exhibit the potential of this site and surrounding neighborhood as a valuable place for its residents. The design proposals will be presented to the public at Letterman's Blueprint and Supply (4726 Government Street) for Mid City Merchants' White Light Night on Friday, November 22 from 6-10 PM (map). We hope to get feedback from the general public as well as gain support and funding to successfully develop the project. The final design proposals will be displayed on this website and judged for a competition sponsored by Letterman's Blueprint and Supply.
