Rhodes Student Perspective

Architecture to me is problem solving. It is a process through which specific issues are addressed and an attempt is made to solve them. Countless factors must be considered and decisions made in order to produce a suitable design. To judge how successful a structure is as a work of architecture is to determine how strongly and clearly it fulfills the goals of the designers. If the building fails to communicate its message or if the manifestation of that message is weak then the building, as architecture, is also weak.

To me the most interesting thing about architecture is its paradoxical nature. Two designers with completely different styles can design buildings that are polar opposites of each other yet both solve the same problem. A team could design a project a dozen times and never use the same answer twice. It is a unique field that has the ability to impact the cultural, political, historical, and ecological aspects of society.
