Food Systems Group is responsible for collecting information and conducting precedent studies to develop a program for the project. We have visited and documented Hollygrove Market, Cafe Reconcile, The New Orleans Mission Garden, and Downtown Grocery (add hyperlinks to these places). The following are the results of the precedent studies and the food systems component of the building program, additional research, and beginning movements towards an initial program conducted by the Food Systems Group. This inital program, along with further synthesis of data helps in the formation process of a further developed program in cooperation with the Homelessness and Housing Groups.

Steps on Forming a Community Garden
  1. Identify Resources
    1. Slow Foods - provide seeds, mulch, recycle materials
    2. Baton Rouge Garden Alliance - network with other independent gardens that share ideas and resources
    3. Local Church - help aid with volunteers and spread word
  2. Site
    1. Evironmental Protection Agency - step by step guide to soil sample
    2. LSU AG Center - soil test and plant analysis lab
  3. Garden Design
    1. Raised Plant Bed Rules
      1. Width: no wider than 4' for ease of access from both sides.
      2. Length: if longer than 6' use bracing to support weight of soil.
      3. Height: 8",12",24" typical heights of bed, the higher the less strain on a person's back

 2.  Planting by Height
             1. When planting know the heights of plants and arrange them according by height.
Shorter plants on the South side and taller ones near the North to minimize the
                 blockage of sunlight.
